Project: The project submitted was the Buchalter residence in Brentwood, California. There are two master closets, which have been transformed into a Spring/Summer closet and a Fall/Winter closet.

Entrant’s Goals: The homeowner came to me as the sole person living in the house with two master closets. At first, the intention was to make one closet the “clothing” closet and the second closet the “accessories” closet. After much consideration, including discussions about the re-sale factor of the house, I decided to create two fully functioning seasonal closets now for my client. In the future, they could easily be described and sold as “His” and “Hers” closets. In both wardrobes — the term which describes closets and dressing rooms collectively — I have designed the following items: pull-out pant racks, custom jewelry and lingerie inserts, pull-out shelves with glass fronts, angled shoe shelves and pull-out shoe shelves, slat wall panel, pull-out valet hooks, pull-out shelves for pocketbooks and purses, etc. We selected a wenge material for the cabinetry in both spaces and used a custom wenge/aluminum handle for the drawers.

To create visual interest, I varied the thickness of the shelves. This also helped to create the boutique look and feel that we were trying to accomplish.

Unique Aspects: The outstanding characteristic of these wardrobes is creating a boutique, dressing room feel in these relatively smaller-sized spaces. We were fortunate to have existing windows in both spaces to bring in the natural element of sunlight.
